Kolhapur is a Historic and ancient holy city in Maharashtra, India. Situated on the banks of river Panchganga, Kolhapur is the largest city in Southern Maharashtra. 

According to the myth, Kolhapur (कोल्हापूर) was named after the demon Kolhasur. There are different stories behind the reason he was killed by the Goddess, but it was his dying wish to name the place where he was killed after him. Thus, Kolhapur comes from the name Kolhasur and, Pur which means a city. Shilahara ancient stone inscriptions mentions kolhapur as 'Kalapuri' or 'Kshullakpur' (Kshullaka- first stage of Jain monkhood).  

The city particularly known for the "Kolhapuri chappal", a hand-crafted buffalo leather slipper that is locally tanned using vegetable dyes. Kolhapuri slippers are sold on Mahadwar road. Other handicrafts include: hand block printing of textiles; silver, bead and paste jewellery crafting; pottery; wood carving and lacquerware; brass sheet work and oxidised silver artwork;and lace and embroidery making.  Kolhapur is also an industrial city with approximately 300+ foundries producing exports with a value of 15 billion rupees per year. 

A manufacturing plant of Kirloskar Oil Engines [KOEL] is set up in 5 star MIDC at Kagal near Kolhapur, besides this Raymond clothes plant is also located in the same industrial area. Kolhapur has two more industrial areas wiz. Gokul-Shirgaon MIDC, Shiroli MIDC & Udyamnagar is an industrial area in the city. 

A number of sports are played in Kolhapur. Wrestling (known as Kusti in Marathi) and football are the most played sports in the city.  Wrestling - Kolhapur is known as wrestling capital of India. Kolhapur has a long history of kushti (wrestling) and has produced many noted wrestlers. The sport flourished during the reign of Shahu of Kolhapur Chattrapati Shahu Maharaj(1894–1922), remembered for being a progressive ruler who brought about many social reforms.
During this golden age, he built Akharas or  Taleems (as colloquially called here) all over Kolhapur and organized wrestling tournaments, inviting legendary wrestlers from across undivided India. Since then, Kolhapur's wrestling culture has been dominated by various Taleems like Gangavesh taleem,Shahupuri taleem, Motibag taleem, etc. In each of these, more than 70 wrestlers undertake training.  

India's first individual Olympian Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav , India's first Hind Kesari Shripati Khanchnale, Rustam-E-Hind Dadu Chougule belonged to Kolhapur.

Shree Mahalaxmi Temple

The Shri Mahalaxmi Temple of Kolhapur in Maharashtra is one of the Shakti Peethas also called Dakshin Kashi. The Kolhapur peetha is of special religious significance, being one of the six places where it is believed one can either obtain salvation from desires or have them fulfilled. The temple takes its name from Mahalakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, and it is believed that the divine couple reside in the area.The crown contains an image of the Sheshnag the serpent of Vishnu. In Her four hands, the deity of Mahalakshmi holds objects of symbolic value. The lower right hand holds a mhalunga (a citrus fruit), in the upper right, a large mace (kaumodaki) with its head touching the ground, in the upper left a shield (khetaka), and in the lower left, a bowl (panpatra).

Rankala Lake

Rankala is famous place to visit in Kolhapur. This lake was constructed by Chhatrapatis of Kolhapur. It is said that its deep area was get created due to quarries of stones which were used for construction of Mahalaxmi temple. There is temple of Rank Bhairav at the center of the lake. The name rankala to the lake is also derived from this god. One can see many lotuses in the lake. There is 'Choupati' around the lake with Gardens. There are several coconut trees in "Shalini Palace" garden. In garden there are some special amenities available for children to play . It is nice place to stroll in the evening. Jotiba temple and Panhala fort are easily visible from here which gives panoramic view. One should not miss sunset view from this place

 

Panhala Fort

Panhala lies on the Sahyadri Mountain Range and is situated in the Kolhapur. It is about 22 km to the northwest of Kolhapur on the Kolhapur-Ratnagiri road and is at an altitude of 3177 feet above sea level.Panhala or Panhalgarh, about 19 kms north-west of Kolhapur, is possibly the largest and most important fort of the Deccan. Half of its length is protected by a natural scarp reinforced by a parapet wall and the remaining half is surrounded by a strong stone wall strengthened with bastions. The Teen Darwaza to the west is an imposing and powerful structure. Panhala was the capital of the Shilahara king Bhoja II during 1178-1209 Ad. It was successively held by the Yadava and Bahamani Kings. In 1489 AD, the fort and the territory was taken over by the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur
 

New Palace

New Palace is an historic building on the Bahvani Mandap-Kasaba Bavda Road. It was constructed during 1877-1884. The whole building is eight-angled and has a tower in the middle with clock. On every glass are painted the events in Chh. Shivaji's life. There is a zoo and a ground lake. Even today, it is the residence of Shreemant Shahu Maharaj. It is dedicated to a fine collection of possessions of Chhatrapaties of Kolhapur like costumes, weapons, games, jewellery, embroidery and paraphernalia such as silver elephant saddle.One section has stuffed Tigers, Tiger heads, Wild Dog, Sloth Bear, staring Wild Buffalo, Lion, Black Panther, Wild Boar, Black Buck, a number of other Deer varieties, and a Himalayan Black Bear.The Darbar Hall occupies a double-height space in middle of the Palace.

 

Siddhagiri Museum

Siddhagiri Gramjivan Wax Museum (Kaneri Math) at Kaneri, near Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The full name is Siddhagiri Gramjivan (Village life) Museum. It is situated at Famous Shri Kshetra Siddhagiri Math.Shri Kshetra Siddhagiri Math has a history of more than 1300 years, and is a holy place of worship of Lord Mahadeva. The museum is spread over 7 acres (28,000 m2) area and has almost 80 scenes which showcase more than 300 statues. There were 12 BALUTEDARS and 18 ALUTEDARS, who provided equipments to all villagers useful in their day-to-day necessities of domestic as well as Agricultural life.. A 125 feet (38 m) deep well and a 42 feet (13 m) huge Shiva idol is worth seeing. Take the Kolhapur-Bangalore NH 4. Travel approx 10–12 km.Take right from Gokul Shirgaon Junction to go to Kaneri village.

 

Jotiba Temple

Shree Jotiba is a holy site of Hinduism near Wadi Ratnagiri, Kolhapur.The deity of the temple is known by the same name, and is held by the locals to be an incarnation of three gods: Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesha and Jamadagni. An annual fair takes place on the full moon night of Chaitra and Vaishakha hindu months. It is an important Hindu religious destination located at an altitude of 3124 feet above sea level in the Panhala. It is believed that the main deity the Shree Jotiba is formed from the souls of three Primary Gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Legendery stories tell that Jyotiba is formed to kill the demon Ratnasur. This temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. This is also called Kedarnath and Wadi Ratnagiri. Mythology says, Jotiba helped Mahalaxmi in her fight with the demons. He founded his kingdom on this mountain.

Kolhapur Town Hall

This structure built in 1872-76 by Charles Mant is a museum displaying artifacts from the Satavahana period discovered in excavations at nearby Bramhapuri Hill. There is large town hall garden on the road between Old Palace (Bhavani Mandap) and Dasara Chowk . The town hall museum managed by Maharashtra government is here. In this museum there are many antique, beautiful paintings, war arms, sculptures in stone and sandal wood. The museum is closed on Sunday and working time is 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.The Museum is encompassed by lush garden covering 7-8 acres of land. The Town Hall Gardens are home to some very exotic species of plants, shrubs and trees.

 Amboli Hill Station / Waterfall

Amboli is a hill station in south Maharashtra, India. At an altitude of 690 m (2,260 ft) it is the last hill station before the coastal highlands of Goa and a relatively unexplored one. Amboli lies in the Sahayadri Hills of Western India, one of the world's "Eco Hot-Spots" and it therefore abounds in a variety of fairly unusual flora and fauna. However, as in the other parts of the Sahaydri Hills, denudation of the forest cover and unregulated government assisted "development" (read "hotels, resorts & highways") are gradually ruining a once pristine environment

 

Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary

Kolhapuri Chappal

Kolhapuri chappals are Indian hand-crafted leather slippers that are locally tanned using vegetable dyes. Kolhapuri Chappals or "Kolhapuris" as they are commonly referred to are a style of open-toed, T-strap sandal which originated from Kolhapur.Previously known as Kapashi, Paytaan, Kachkadi, Bakkalnali, and Pukari.This Chappal has been popular since from the 18th century. Originally made from buffalo-hide and thread, they weighed as much as 2.01 kilos because of the thickness of the sole, which made them durable despite the extreme heat and mountainous terrain found in the state of Maharashtra
